Aged Adirondack-Top Dreadnought

$749.99$920.99

Part of our Tonewood Reserve Series, the Recording King RD-328 evokes classic dreadnought style, sound & volume thanks to hand-selected tonewoods and vintage styling.

The foundation of the 328’s tone comes from solid aged Adirondack spruce tops. Adirondack’s excellent projection, coupled with three decades of curing delivers a stiff, loud, lightweight top with powerful fundamental tone.

Combine the aged tops with solid Rosewood back and sides, and you have the all-solid basics for guitars that have powered genres like bluegrass and country for decades.

We finish the 328 with classy, low-key fretboard dots on the rosewood fretboard, and a vintage-style tortoise pickguard to protect the top. The 328’s classic rosette design and herringbone body purfling complete the traditional look.

For players that need the power and volume that only a dreadnought can provide, but still want the warmth and vibrancy that comes with aged tonewoods, the RD-328 offers the best of both worlds at a fraction of the price of a vintage instrument.

Add a gigbag or hardshell case and a capo for a complete package.

Introducing the Recording King Aged Adirondack-Top Dreadnought.

But first… as many of us agree, guitars that were built right from high quality tone woods age well when cared for properly. When a player speaks of the elusive vintage tone, they’re usually not looking for the sound of 30 year old guitar when it was new. Rather, it’s the sound of an old guitar in the here and now. There are several ways to acquire a guitar capable of producing that vintage tone today:

  • Inherit one
  • A time machine
  • Hunt one down and pay a small fortune for it
  • Buy a new guitar with a torrefied top (controversial)
  • Buy a new guitar made with high-quality aged woods (also controversial).

There are a few rare Recording King guitars from the 1930’s on the market. And if well-cared for, yes, they do sound amazing, and they are costly. Most featured sold spruce tops, and mahogany or rosewood back and sides, like some of the top-end Recording King guitars being produced today. Of course they age well and issue that elusive vintage sound. Today Recording King offers two new-built guitars that aim for the sound of a well-aged guitar: torrefied models (i.e. the Torrefied Adirondack Spruce 000) and aged tone wood models, like the one shown here.

Not every cork-sniffing tone-hound agrees that the sound of a fine, naturally-aged guitar can be produced by anything but natural aging. That is, of course, an ear of the beholder affair. Something those tone-hounds to tend to agree on is that tone-alone doesn’t define a great guitar. Dana Bourgeois writing for acousticguitar.com explains that imprecise fretting and saddle placements were much more common in the 1930’s than they are today. In a tone vs. intonation showdown, intonation naturally wins.

There are other things the tone-hounds can agree on: the Recording King aged-wood models have amazing tone that simply can’t be had in a comparably-priced guitar, old or new. The Recording King Aged Adirondack-Top Dreadnought delivers the vintage tone of a 30-year old top along with a precision build and literally no wear and tear. Get yours today.
